The
North
Carolina Brass was formed in the summer of
2000 with the expectation of performing throughout North
Carolina and to offer a concert series for
the public. The NC Brass performs a variety of music from Baroque
and Classical to Jazz, Pop, and 20th Century and is available for
educational concerts, weddings, church services, parties, special
occasions, private lessons and clinics.
A
native of Raleigh, NC, Ramon F Kenan began playing
trumpet at age 11. He is a graduate of Enloe High School and holds a
Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Music from Oral Roberts University, Cum
Laude. He has worked with band programs in the Wake County Public
Schools System and was an Adjunct Music Professor at both North
Carolina Central and North Carolina State Universities. His musical
travels abroad include Canada, Europe, Bahamas, Indonesia and has
performed with Clarke Terry, Grady Tate, Stanley Turrentine and the
legendary R&B Group "The O'Jay's". Ramon is currently featured
as the lead trumpet player with the Raleigh Jazz Orchestra. Besides
the trumpet, Ramon also plays keyboard, drums, guitar and composes
in various genres such as Jazz, Classical, Blues, R&B and

Ben
Shaw, a native of Durham, NC, began playing trumpet in
school band 35 years ago. While still in high school he began
performing professionally part time and by 1976 was working as a
full time trumpet player. He continued entertaining with groups
based out of the Charlotte area until 1988 when he moved back to the
Triangle and formed Brassworks, a shop specializing in brass musical
instrument repair and custom trumpets. Since moving back to this
area he has played two seasons in Myrtle Beach, SC at the Savoy
Theater with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and he has subbed with the
Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Buddy Morrow. Ben continues to play
regularly with Leon Jordan's Continentals Orchestra, The Raleigh
Jazz Orchestra as well as other groups in this area.
Robin
Gorham is a native of Lexington Park, Maryland and began
playing French horn in middle school. While attending UNC-Chapel
Hill, she won the 1989 Concerto Competition and the 1990 Earl Slocum
Band Award. She has performed with the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra,
the Greensboro Concert Band and numerous other ensembles in the
Triangle area. Currently, she is a member of the North Carolina Wind
Orchestra and the Triangle Brass Band. Robin is a national board
certified teacher and is employed as the director of bands at
Coats-Erwin Middle School in Harnett County where she was the
2004-2005 Teacher of the Year.
Dean
Olah studied trombone and music education under scholarship
at the University of Toledo where he completed his BA and course
work for a master’s degree. During the summers he worked as a
counselor and orchestral musician at the Brevard Music Center. Dean
has performed with symphonies in Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville,
Toledo, Ann Arbor, Adrian, Sandusky, and Perrysburg and in shows
with the Toledo Theater, the Croswell Opera House, the North
Carolina Theatre, the North Carolina Opera and the Cape Fear
regional Theatre. A former public school band director, Dean remains
active in education through the Music Educators National Conference,
the International Trombone Association, by teaching private lessons
and writing reviews for the Online Trombone Journal. As a jazz
trombonist Dean has recorded and performed with the Raleigh Jazz
Orchestra, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, the Jack Runyan Big Band, the
Johnny Knorr Orchestra, the Casablanca Jazz Orchestra, the Andrew
Thielen Big Band, the Lawrence Welk Show, and Lorna Luft. He is a
founding member of the Academy Brass Quintet which continues to
entertain audiences throughout Ohio. Dean is a NC Licensed Teacher
and School Administrator as well as an A+ and Network+
Certified Technician and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
(MCSE) and Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT).
David
Garrett studied music at the University of Cincinnati's
College Conservatory and at Brevard, North Carolina and works for
the Sanford Holshouser Law Firm. David has a Bachelor of Education
in Music from the University of Toledo, a Master of Music degree
from Bowling Green State University and obtained his Juris Doctor
from the University of Toledo while working as a professional
musician in the Toledo, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan areas. David ‘s
artistic background and broad research experience using
quantitative, qualitative, and legal research methodologies yields
attention to detail and a fresh approach to solving problems. He has
assisted in compiling chapters on forum non conveniens, transfer,
and conflict of laws in one of the leading hornbooks on federal
civil procedure, the application of the consensual encounter
doctrine in encounters with law enforcement officials in airports,
as well as performing one of the first qualitative studies in the
development of aesthetic awareness in children. David has been an
active member in the national Federalist Society, and now is a
member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the American
Immigration Lawyer's Association, the North Carolina Economic
Development Association, and the 10th Judicial District Bar. David
is admitted to practice in North Carolina, the Eastern District
Court of North Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Focusing primarily on issues surrounding economic development, his
work revolves around managing the details to successfully close
commercial land transactions, corporate and municipal land
acquisitions, annexation, condemnation, zoning, mergers and
acquisitions, corporate formation, nonprofit status recognition,
corporate immigration, human resource issues, and litigation at all
levels, from trial court to appeals.
